Established in 1947 as the Department of Industrial and Rural Recreation, this unit at North Carolina State College (later University) changed its name to Recreation and Park Administration in 1958 and Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management in 1989. Originally in the School of Education, it came under the School of Forest Resources (later College of Natural Resources) in 1967.
In 1947, Thomas I. Hines develop a new undergraduate curriculum at North Carolina State College (later University) to prepare students to provide recreation services in rural and industrial settings. The new department he formed was called Industrial and Rural Recreation, and it existed originally in the School of Education. It issued its first diplomas in 1951. In 1958 the department name changed to Recreation and Park Administration. In 1967 it was transferred to the School of Forest Resources (later College of Natural Resources). In 1989 the name was changed again to Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management.
A second undergraduate curriculum of Natural Resources Recreation Management was added to the department in 1968. The two undergraduate programs were merged into Recreation Resources Administration in 1975. A graduate program had been added in 1970. In 1977 NCSU's program became the first accredited by the Council on Accreditation of the National Recreation and Park Association. A revision of the program in 1994 resulted in the following four concentrations: Program Management, Natural Resource Management, Park Management, and Tourism and Commercial Recreation. Sports Management was added in 1996.
The department's outreach and extension programs date from 1951 with the first Industrial Recreation Workshop. The Recreation Resources Service was launced in 1987. The professional schools had their beginnings when Thomas Hines first led the Revenue Sources Management School in 1965.
