Contained here are records, 1924-2011, of the North Carolina State University's Department of Materials Science and Engineering and its predessecor departments. The collection includes correspondence, reports, reprints, and photographs pertaining to courses and curricula, equipment and travel expenses, the Department of Geology, ceramics, clay and bricks. Also included is material pertaining to organizations such as the Foundry educational Foundation, Geological Society of North America, the North Carolina Academy of Sciences, and Sigma Xi. Financial and grant records are also included.
The origins of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering lie in the Departments of Geology and Mineral Industries Engineering. Only in 1972 did the University create a discrete Materials Engineering Department, which became the Materials Science and Engineering Department in 1986.
Biographical/historical note
Materials Science and Engineering comprise the design, development, selection, and processing of engineering materials. Typical of the industries served by materials engineers are: aerospace, electrical and electronics, construction, nuclear power, and transportation. Material Sciences and Engineering includes specialty areas such as ceramic engineering, metallurgical engineering, polymeric materials, and materials processing. In general, Materials Scientists develop materials that have certain properties, such as Gore-Tex, which is made of a polymer that keeps water out while allowing sweat to evaporate. Materials Science Engineers work, according to their website, "with every material imaginable in every setting imaginable, including the human body."
The origins of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering lie in the Departments of Geology and Mineral Industries Engineering. Only in 1972 did the University create a discrete Materials Engineering Department, which became the Materials Science and Engineering Department in 1986.
Additional information and resources on the history of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering can be found through the NC State University Historical State website.

Scope/content
Contained here are records, 1924-2011, of the North Carolina State University's Department of Materials Science and Engineering and its predessecor departments. The collection includes correspondence, reports, annual reports, reprints, and photographs pertaining to courses and curricula, equipment and travel expenses, the Department of Geology, ceramics, clay and bricks. Also included is material pertaining to organizations such as the Foundry educational Foundation, Geological Society of North America, the North Carolina Academy of Sciences, and Sigma Xi. Financial and grant records are also included. In 2008 1.5 linear feet of employee time sheets (1996-1997) were deaccessioned according to instructions for GU206 of the UNC-system retention and disposition schedule. A. F. Greaves-Walker's consulting files, formerly in this collection, have been transferred to the Greaves-Walker Ceramic Engineering Papers (MC 00675).
