ECOS, Inc. was established in or before 1970 by student groups at North Carolina State University, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as an organization to encourage the preservation of the environment and the introduction of beneficial alternatives to everyday pollutants. ECOS was chartered with the state of North Carolina, and had branches throughout the state, though the three Triangle university chapters were the primary members of the organization. Chapters were named for the cities they were located in, not the institutions they operated out of. Membership was open to students and faculty at these universities, as well as interested citizens living in the towns where the universities are located. NC State's chapter disbanded in or after 1976; ECOS eventually disbanded as well, though that date is also unknown.
