The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) was founded in 1880 and is a not-for-profit professional organization that promotes the art, science and practice of mechanical and multidisciplinary engineering and allied sciences throughout the world. The core values of ASME are rooted in its mission to better enable mechanical engineering practitioners to contribute to the well-being of humankind.
NC State's student section of the ASME was established in or before 1945 to allow mechanical engineering students at NC State to share in the practice of these values. NC State's student section has remained active since that time, and in the 2000s has emerged as one of the most active student sections of the ASME in the world. The student section at NC State was once housed under the Region IV unit of the ASME; now, it is part of the Eastern North Carolina unit.

The records of the North Carolina State University Student Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) include records from both NC State's section, and from the regional unit (Region IV) that NC State's section was formerly housed under. Types of materials include correspondence, meeting minutes, photographs, membership rosters, conference materials, and other general information. Materials range in date from 1945 to 1975.
Materials are arranged in two series, NC State Records and Region IV Records. Materials are arranged alphabetically in each series, and then chronologically therein.
This series contains materials specific to NC State's student section of the ASME. Included in this series are meeting minutes, membership rosters, financial reports, correspondence, photographs, and other general information about the NC State student section.
NC State's student section of the ASME was formerly part of Region IV (the Dixie Region). Materials in the series include files on regional conferences and competitions, as well as those on the annual operation of the Region IV student sections. The latter files contain a mixture of documents from the national ASME offices directed to all Region IV student sections, and copies of items submitted to the national office from the various student sections. Some NC State records are mixed in, but the majority of materials in this series come from the other student chapters in the Region, including those at Duke University, the University of South Carolina, the Georgia Institute of Technology (now Georgia Tech University), the University of Tennessee, the University of Virginia, and the Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Tech).
