The Natural Resources Library supports the College of Natural Resources and the Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences at North Carolina State University. The College of Natural Resources has undergone many name and structural changes since its founding in 1929, when North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) formally established the Department of Forestry in the School of Agriculture. In 1931 the Department of Forestry was renamed the Division of Forestry, School of Agriculture and Forestry. In 1950 the Division of Forestry was elevated to School status and named the School of Forestry. The School underwent another name change in 1968 to the School of Forest Resources, which is the name the College was known by during the time period of this collection. The school became a college in 1987, and its name changed from College of Forest Resources to College of Natural Resources in 2000.
This collection contains records relating to the activities and administration of the North Carolina State University Natural Resources Library. These records include memoranda and correspondence, including intradepartmental memos, questionnaires, requests to borrow materials, thank-you notes, and handwritten notes between August 1979 and April 1982. The majority of the correspondence was sent by Dr. Pamela Puryear, who at the time was head of the Forest Resources Library (now known as the Natural Resources Library).
This collection also contains literature guides and lists of new acquisitions for Forest Resources Library: Jan. 1972, August 1973, November 1974, December 1974, and December 1979.
The earliest record, dated 17 July 1973, is a job description sent to Mr. Charles B. Lynam in regards to a postion opening at the Forest Resources Library.
The most recent record is a memo from Pamela Puryear, head librarian at Natural Resources Library, asking Maurice Toler, head of archives department at DH Hill Library whether continued preserving of library correspondence files was appropriate. This memo was dated 13 April 1982 and no subsequent correspondence is in this collection.
