By the mid-1960s, the Hill building was no longer large enough, and the library space was expanded by building an 11-story book tower and connecting the original space with the former student union (now the Erdahl-Cloyd or west wing of the library). Further expansion and renovation occurred in the 1980s, culminating in 1990 with the opening of the second, or "south" bookstack tower.
