 Historical Note

The Park Scholarships were established at NC State in 1996 with a grant from the Park Foundation of Ithaca, N.Y., to fund an inaugural class of 25 scholars. The program has as its namesake Roy H. Park, NCSU class of 1931, a native of Dobson, N.C. At North Carolina State, Park served as editor of the Technician, the school newspaper, among other activities. His media interests culminated in his establishment of Park Communications Inc., which owned and operated newspapers and radio and television stations across the United States.

The Park Scholarships program was established to provide a superb educational opportunity for exceptionally talented and well-prepared young men and women who merit the intellectual challenge of a distinguished faculty and a superior university. Upon arrival at North Carolina State, Park Scholars are immediately introduced to professors who will challenge them to push the limits of scholarship, leadership and service in their own lives and the lives of others. The students commit themselves wholeheartedly to these pursuits and consequently only undertake employment that is directly related to their professional development, typically on campus. Their drive yields tangible results, which can be seen in their achievements, leadership positions and service activities. The processed portion of this collection is organized into two series: Administrative Records and Student Records. The Student Records series is closed to all but Park Scholarship staff. A third series, Unprocessed Materials, contains additions to the collection which have not yet been processed. These items are arranged in the order received.
