Scope and Content Note

Chancellor Harrelson's papers reflect the University's actions during times of depression, world war, and post-war expansion. Economic depression of the 1930s, with decreased enrolment, led to the consolidation of the North Carolina university system. Correspondence with the University of North Carolina reflects the difficulties involved in the consolidation of the universities, their courses, and the accompanying financial disruptions.

As the United States' involvement in World War II increased, the makeup of North Carolina State College was again impacted. Military training played a predominant role in college life, with the requirement that every student participate in training and then deployment into the war zones. After World War II ended, returning veterans continued to effect the college. Returning veterans, in increasing numbers, strained the college's classroom and housing space. In addition, more than ever before, veterans were married with families who needed places to live. This led to a married housing area called "Vetville" with the need for governance.

After the lean Depression and War years, the NC State began to expand with numerous building programs. In addition to new classroom construction, the college undertook a controversial nuclear engineering program, which involved the errection of a nuclear reactor and lab. Chancellor Harrelson's papers include material relating to the nuclear reacotor's design as well as important safety requirements.

Chancellor Harrelson's papers are a reflection of a period of great changes for the university, and range in date from 1933 to 1953.

Historical Note

The Chancellor is the chief administrative and executive officer, leader and spokesperson of North Carolina State University. The Chancellor, who has complete executive authority for the university, subject to the direction of the president and the board of trustees, defines the scope and authority of faculties, councils, committees, and officers of North Carolina State University, is a member of all faculties and other academic bodies of the university, and has the right to preside over the deliberations of the legislative bodies of the faculties of the institution. The Office of the Chancellor retains authority in faculty and EPA personnel, student matters, contracts, leases, and other agreements, and the acquisition and disposition of property.

The title of the head of North Carolina State University has changed over time. First the university was led by a president (1889-1934), then a vice president of the Consolidated University (1934), then a dean of Administration (1934-1945), and finally a chancellor (1945-present).

John William Harrelson was born in 1885 in Cleveland County, North Carolina. He attended North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts [later, North Carolina State University] and graduated in 1909 with a B.A. in Engineering. He earned a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the College in 1915. Harrelson was selected to head State College under the new title of Dean of Administration in 1934. His title changed to Chancellor in 1945, and he served that position until 1953. Harrelson died in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1955.
