The notes include details about Knapp, his family and life in Currituck County. The notes also contain references to 
                <title ns2:type="simple" ns2:href="" render="italic">The Clansman</title> author Thomas Dixon.</abstract>
            <abstract id="ref3" label="Abstract">Allan R. Miller (1952 - 1994) received his bachelor's (1975) and master's (1977) degrees from North Carolina State University. Publisher, financier, and philanthropist Joseph Palmer Knapp (1864 - 1951) was the director of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and publisher of numerous magazines, including 
                <title ns2:type="simple" ns2:href="" render="italic">Collier's</title> and 
                <title ns2:type="simple" ns2:href="" render="italic">The Women's Home Companion</title>. He first came to Currituck County, N.C., in 1916, and purchased Mackay Island and a hunting club from author Thomas Dixon soon thereafter. Beginning in 1920, he and his family spent most of their time in North Carolina. In 1923, Knapp began donating money to the educational system in Currituck County, N.C.. Through the Knapp Foundation, Inc., he continued to donate money to North Carolina schools for the rest of his life. The Knapp Foundation's biggest contribution, funding to construct the Insitute of Government Building at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, occurred after Knapp's death.</abstract>

            <p>Allan R. Miller (1952 - 1994) received his bachelor's (1975) and master's (1977) degrees from North Carolina State University.</p>
