            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>James Madison Benson was born 1853 December 12 and was ordained by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in December 1899. He had previously taught school in Hyde County, North Carolina. He died on 1919 March 9. His son, James Reuben Benson, was born 1876 December 27 and died on 1894 October 31, while a student at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University).</p>

            <p>The James M. Benson Letters contains a letter, 1894 November 1, from President Holladay to James Reuben Benson's father, informing him of the death of his son, a student at North Carolina State University; a letter, 1894 August 10, to Benson from D. H. Hill regarding entrance to North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, and a letter, 1894 October 7, from James Reuben Benson to his father.</p>
