            <p>Josephus Daniels was editor and publisher of the Raleigh 
                <title ns2:href="" render="italic" type="simple">News and Observer</title>, Secretary of the Navy (1913-1921), Ambassador to Mexico (1933-1942), and member of the Watauga Club. He was an alumnus of the University of North Carolina law school. Daniels was influential in publishing in the Raleigh area and published several newspapers including the 
                <title ns2:show="embed" ns2:href="" render="italic" type="simple">State Chronicle</title> and the 
                <title ns2:show="embed" ns2:href="" render="italic" type="simple">North Carolinian</title>, as well as the 
                <title ns2:show="embed" ns2:href="" render="italic" type="simple">News and Observer</title>.</p>

            <head>Scope and Content Note</head>
            <p>The Josephus Daniels letter to C. A. Upchurch regarding the founding of North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts is a six-page letter in pencil from Daniels to C. A. Upchurch describing the founding of North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University), which is believed to have been sent in an accompanying envelope postmarked Mexico City in 1939. Also included is a graduation address made by Daniels for Naval Ensigns in Engineering at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in 1943.</p>
