The Catherine Roberts Papers contain various writings relating to animal rights. These papers include a selection of Roberts's published writings, correspondence received by Roberts, and a collection of philosophical publications that contain articles written by some of her colleagues.
Born in California in 1917, Catherine Roberts trained as a microbiologist and geneticist, but then turned away from a career as a scientist and dedicated herself to writing about science, ethics, and religion.

Bigraphical Note
Born in 1917, Catherine Roberts was a fourth generation Californian. Trained as a microbiologist and geneticist, she received her Ph.D. in 1943 at the University of California, Berkeley. She was also a Platonist. After working for fifteen years as a researcher at the Carlsberg Laboratorium in Copenhagen, Denmark, she became dissatisfied with the attitude of the scientific community. She abandoned her successful career and devoted the rest of her life to writing in an effort to evolve a synthesis of science, ethics, and religion. She was a prolific writer, and a tireless advocate for the humane treatment of animals. Among her many published works are
The Scientific Conscience (1967),
Science, Animals, and Evolution (1980) and numerous articles in scientific and philosophical journals. Married to Richard Thorne, Catherine Roberts died on April 12, 1993.

Basil Wrighton, "Vivisection and the True Aims of Education in Biology," by George K. Russell, and a 1975 report published by The Society for Animal Rights on a mass killing of blackbirds by the United States Army at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, using the chemical Tergitol.
