Steve F. Sapontzis, professor emeritus of philosophy at California State University East Bay (formerly California State University Hayward), taught philosophy at California State University Hayward from 1971 until 1999. Sapontzis is the author of
Morals, Reason, and Animals (1987) and editor of
Food for Thought: the Debate Over Eating Meat (2004). Since 1984, he has been a co-editor of
Between the Species: A Journal of Ethics.

Biographical Note
Steve F. Sapontzis, professor emeritus of philosophy at California State University East Bay (formerly California State University Hayward), was born in New York City on February 9, 1945, son of Zissis Peter and Lea Marie Vial Sapontzis. He married Jeanne Marie Gocker on December 25, 1992.
Sapontzis began his career at California State University Hayward in 1971 and served as assistant, associate, and full professor of philosophy there until he retired in 1999. He received the B.A. degree from Rice University in 1967. He studied at the University of Paris in 1967-1968 and then enrolled in graduate studies at Yale University, where he completed a Ph.D. in philosophy in 1971.
Sapontzis is the author of
Morals, Reason, and Animals (1987) and editor of
Food for Thought: the Debate Over Eating Meat (2004). Since 1984, he has been a co-editor of
Between the Species: A Journal of Ethics. He was a member of the board of editorial advisors of the
American Philosophical Quarterly, 1991-1994, and a member of the animal welfare research committee at Lawrence Berkeley (California) Laboratory, 1986-1990. He was also a grantee of the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1976 and of the American Council of Learned Societies in 1988. His memberships include the American Philosophical Association, the Society for the Study of Ethics and Animals (board of directors, 1984- ), the American Society for Value Inquiry, and the International Society for Environmental Ethics.

Drafts and offprints of articles, 1978-1998, and reviews, 1982-1996, written by Steve F. Sapontzis, as well as drafts of speeches and presentations by Sapontzis, reviews of his book,
Morals, Reason, and Animals, clippings of articles by or about Sapontzis, and flyers and leaflets advertising events at which Sapontzis was to speak. Most of the articles were published in philosophical journals, such as
The Journal of Value Inquiry, the
American Philosophical Quarterly,
Ethics,
Ethics and Animals, and
Environmental Ethics. The speeches and presentations include speeches prepared for a variety of purposes and settings, including speeches to be given at rallies as well as papers to be read at academic conferences. The clippings are chiefly from
The Pioneer at California State University Hayward or
The Daily Review, Hayward, Calif. There are also articles from other publications, including newspapers such as the
San Francisco Examiner and the
Oakland Tribune, and magazines, including the
Animals' Agenda and the
Animals' Voice.
