The Raleigh Chamber Music Guild in Raleigh, North Carolina, has presented chamber music concerts since 1941. As of 2006, the Guild presents nationally and internationally known artists as well as North Carolina musicians. The Guild also offers events for local musicians and composers, including master classes for and performances by young, student musicians, competitions for chamber music composers, and sponsorship of concerts by local musicians.

Historical Note
The roots of the Raleigh Chamber Music Guild (RCMG) lie in the efforts of a small group of people who planned a series of three chamber music concerts by North Carolina artists in the spring of 1941. From this beginning the Guild has continued to grow and evolve over the past fifty-plus years, shifting location several times. In addition to featuring North Carolina artists, the Guild has expanded its scope to include nationally and internationally known artists, such as the Juilliard String Quartet, and the Tokyo and Cleveland Quartets. The Guild also offers events for local musicians and composers, including master classes for and performances by young, student musicians, competitions for chamber music composers, and sponsorship of concerts by local musicians. The Guild's activities are funded primarily by member support, with additional contributions from foundations, individual benefactors, and the assistance of North Carolina State University. A trust fund also provides financial support for various Guild programs.
Chronology
1941 Spring
Guild founded by a group of about twenty local music lovers and musicians in Raleigh, North Carolina.
1941 April 25
First concert, presented in the Raleigh Little Theatre. Artists: Edgar and Dorothy Alden, Charlotte Houston Atkinson, Herbert Bird, violins; Katherine Eide, William Klenz, Peter Farrell, cellos; Christian Kutschinski, Julia Mueller, Paul Oncley, violas; Henry Bruinsma, double bass; Aileen McMillan, Dorothy Phelps, piano.
1941 Season
Subscription (3 concerts): $2.00.
1941-1942
Expenses for six concerts: less than $500.00.
1942-1946
Concerts suspended as wartime duties took many musicians away from Raleigh.
1947 September
Guild re-organized and concerts moved to St. Mary's College auditorium.
1949 January 22
Juilliard String Quartet the first non-local ensemble presented.
1949-1950 Season
Concerts moved to Meredith College Auditorium.
1953-1954 Season
Budapest String Quartet gave its first concert in Raleigh.
1957-1958 Season
Began the tradition of presenting all artists from outside the Triangle area. (Subsequently, there were occasional exceptions.).
1961-1962 Season
Artists' Fees: $2,750 (5 concerts).
1962-1963 Season
Concerts moved to the ballroom of Erdahl-Cloyd Student Union at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University).
1969-1970
Winston Music Collection was established at NCSU.
1972
RCMG Endowment was established to provide basic operating support.
1972
Concerts moved to the (then) new Stewart Theatre at NCSU.
1984
Guild commissions its first work.
1985
Ellen Black Winston Trust Fund established as a result of a bequest. Income used to defer the costs of one annual memorial concert in Ellen Winston's name in perpetuity.
1986
Guild hired first part-time manager.
1989
Guild opened its first office at Artspace in downtown Raleigh.
1991-1992
The 50th anniversary season. Annual budget $45,000. Season subscription: $50.
1991-1993
General decline in audience size. Guild hired a consultant and developed a strategic plan.
1993
Guild moved its office to 112 South Blount St.
1994-1995 Season
Concerts moved to the new Fine Arts Center at Ravenscroft School. Subscriptions increase by 70%.
1999
Sights and Sounds on Sundays series, featuring North Carolina ensembles, debuted at the North Carolina Museum of Art.
2000
Guild created a new three-year strategic plan.
2001
A three-year, $150,000 endowment fund drive announced.
2001-2002
The 60th anniversary season. Annual operating budget $102,350. Season subscription: $75. Masters Series moved to the new A. J. Fletcher Opera Theater in the BTI Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Raleigh. Season opened with the Eroica Trio playing the world premiere of a work commissioned by RCMG for the occasion.
