The Lloyd Hurst Swindell Papers, 1907 - 1945, contain documents relating to Swindell's occupation as a farmer. The majority of materials are journals in which Swindell detailed the daily management of and activities at his farm from 1915 to 1943. A small number of personal materials, including examinations and class notes from courses he completed at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, are also included.
Lloyd Hurst Swindell (1890 - 1985) was a Raleigh farmer. He received a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Textile Industry from North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1911.
Lloyd Hurst Swindell was born 1890 March 1, presumably in North Carolina. He graduated from the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1911 with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Textile Industry. The college's alumni directories indicate that Swindell was a microscopist with the state board of health (1911-1912), an employee of Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company in Raleigh (1912-1914), and an employee of the Pedigreed Seed Company in Hartsville, South Carolina (1914-1915). Between 1915 and 1927, the alumni directory lists Swindell's occupation as a Raleigh farmer. Evidence from this collection suggests he continued farming in the area through the 1930s, growing corn and cotton. Swindell died on 1985 August 4 in Raleigh; he was survived by his wife Elizabeth Caldwell Swindell, who died in Raleigh on 1995 April 5. A native of Texas, Elizabeth was born 1905 October 24. She spent her childhood in Yazoo City, Mississippi, and attended Belhaven College in Jackson, Mississippi. She completed graduate work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University, and the University of Wisconsin before teaching at Belhaven and at Peace College in Raleigh.

The collection is organized into two principal series:
This series is divided into four subseries. The Corn Variety Experiment Charts subseries documents results of tests conducted on seeds from Swindell's farm. The Receipts subseries includes invoices for ginning services, groceries and other supplies, medical services, and subscriptions to farming periodicals. Also included are receipts belonging to Samuel M. Walker, a Raleigh resident and friend of Lloyd Swindell. The Enclosures From Journals subseries contains papers, principally receipts and calculations, Swindell filed in his journals. These materials have been removed from each volume but kept distinct from documents pulled from other journals. The Journals subseries is the largest component of this series and of the entire collection. In each volume, Swindell documented the daily activities at his farm, including expenses incurred, monies received, acreage farmed, weather developments, and crop quantities. The journals are a variety of sizes and date from the periods 1915-1921 and 1930-1943.
