The Frederick Schenck Barkalow Papers include materials related to Barkalow's career, research, and service in environmental and conservation organizations. The papers include correspondence, materials on environmental issues, organizational materials, teaching materials, photographs, published material, and Barkalow's extensive research into the gray squirrel.
Frederick Schenck Barkalow Jr. (1914-1982) served as a professor of zoology at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1947 to 1979. He taught and researched extensively, and among his many publications was an in-depth study of the gray squirrel.
Biographical/historical note
Born in Marietta, Georgia. Dr. Barkalow received a B.S. in Chemistry from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1936. Three years later, he received an M.S. in Zoology from the University of Michigan. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army where he rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel. Following the War, he received a Ph.D. in Zoology at Michigan. Dr. Barkalow became a professor of zoology at N.C. State College from 1947 until his retirement in 1979. He also served as head of the department from 1950 to 1963. During his career at N.C. State, Barkalow had teaching and research responsibilities in both the Zoology Department and the School of Forestry. His extensive research resulted in many publications, including a definitive study of the gray squirrel which was published in 1973. Dr. Barkalow received many honors and awards during his career. In 1979, he became the first member of the N.C. Wildlife Conservation Hall of Fame for his "lifetime of dedicated service" to wildlife conservation. He also served on numerous private environmental organizations and state conservation commissions.
Scope/content
This collection documents Barkalow's research and professional activities in his career as instructor, zoologist, and conservationist. His most authoritative subject of research was the American Gray Squirrel, resulting in numerous articles and a book. He was also very involved in wildlife conservation from a hunter/outdoorsman perspective. The first series of Alphabetical Files contains personal and professional correspondence as well as information gathered on subjects of involvement. The Controversies series documents environmental issues in North Carolina including the expansion of Raleigh-Durham International Airport and its effect on the William B. Umstead State Park. The Organizations series contains correspondence and reports on Barkalow's activities in regional and national conservation organizations. The Photographs series includes a collection of prints and negatives from his Alabama Game Inventory conducted prior to World War II as well as extensive squirrel research photos. The Publications series consists of Barkalow's published material with supporting documentation. The Squirrel Studies series includes his extensive research into the American Gray Squirrel. The final series of University Duties documents his role as a teacher at North Carolina State University.
Arrangement
The collection is arranged in seven series:
