            <abstract id="ref2" label="Abstract">The Herbert McNee Hamlin (1894 - 1968) Papers, 1940 - 1968, document Hamlin's contribution to the progress of vocational education including speeches, articles, publications, correspondence, interviews, reports and his comprehensive 
                <emph render="doublequote">position papers</emph> resulting from his intensive study of the North Carolina agricultural education situation. A small number of personal materials include photographs, a biography, a bibliography of publications, and a eulogy.</abstract>
            <abstract id="ref3" label="Abstract">Herbert McNee Hamlin came to North Carolina State University in 1962 after retiring from a distinguished career as professor and chairman of the Department of Vocational Education at the University of Illinois. His research, in the capacity of consultant to the Office of the Dean of the School of Education, was a major contribution to the Governor's Study Commission Report, 
                <title ns2:type="simple" ns2:href="" render="italic">Occupational Education for the Public Schools of North Carolina</title>, in determining the educational needs of farmers throughout their farming careers, the needs of prospective farmers, and how to develop competent agriculture educators.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Born in Brookings, South Dakota, and reared on a farm in southern Minnesota, Herbert McNee Hamlin received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Iowa State University and a Ph.D. at the University of Chicago. Early influences during his years as an undergraduate at Iowa State led to a long and distinguished career in Vocational Education. Hamlin was a public school teacher in Iowa and a college professor at Iowa State College. He went on to the University of Illinois in 1938 where he served as professor of agriculture education, acting Dean of the College of Education, and as Chairman of the Department of Vocational Education until his retirement.</p>
            <p>In 1962, Hamlin came to North Carolina State University as consultant attached to the Office of the Dean of the School of Education and made a major contribution to the progress of vocational education through his comprehensive 
                <emph render="doublequote">position papers </emph> resulting from the intensive study of the North Carolina vocational education situation. He took a position as Professor of Economics and then Professor of Education in 1964 and was a driving force in the establishment of the Regional Center for Research, Development, and Training in Occupational Education.</p>

            <head>Scope and Content Note</head>
            <p>The Herbert McNee Hamlin Papers document Hamlin's work in the capacity of consultant attached to the Office of the Dean of the School of Education at North Carolina State University. This work includes a 1962 study of policy and policy-making, research and development in agricultural education reported in 
                <emph render="doublequote">position papers</emph> to the Division of Vocational Education, Vocational Agriculture Section North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. In addition, state studies, 1963, of vocational education programs are included and interviews, 1967 - 1968, with school superintendents of North Carolina schools with a final report to the Governor's Study Commission, 
                <title ns2:href="" render="italic" type="simple">Occupational Education for the Public Schools of North Carolina</title>.</p>
