            <abstract id="ref3" label="Abstract">William Staley Bridges was a professor of mechanical engineering at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) for 42 years, from 1919 to 1961. He received his B.S. and M.S. from North Carolina State College in 1919 and 1926 respectively.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>William Staley Bridges (1890-1974) a professor of mechanical engineering at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1919 to 1961 was born on 15 August 1890. He received his B.S. and M.S. from North Carolina State College in 1919 and 1926 respectively.</p>
            <p>Bridges was a member of the North Carolina National Guard and served as 1st Sergeant and Master Sergeant of G-2 Infantry April 1917 through February 1919.</p>
            <p>Memberships in organizations include North Carolina Registered Engineers, Raleigh Engineers Club, and the Masonic Lodge.</p>

            <head>Scope and Content Note</head>
            <p>The William Staley Bridges Papers include reports of experiments made by students in the Mechanical Engineering program at 
                <corpname>North Carolina State College </corpname> (later 
                <corpname> North Carolina State University</corpname>). The reports are all in similar format. These reports include information such as the object of the experiment, a description of the aparatus, a theory, the procedure, the data collected, and conclusions. Some reports are handwritten and some are typed. Studies cover a broad range of subjects, including 
                <subject>steam regulating equipment</subject>, 
                <subject>radiator and generator tests</subject>, 
                <subject>panel heat tests</subject>, 
                <subject>heating control tests</subject>, a 
                <subject>thermal flow study</subject>,an 
                <subject>air dryer test</subject>, 
                <subject>two effect evaporator test</subject>, 
                <subject>steam jet refridgeration</subject>, 
                <subject>vapor compression refrigeration</subject> tests and 
                <subject>engine tests</subject>. The experiments dates range from 1947 to 1958.</p>
