Biographical Note

Alexander Quarles Holladay was born at Cherry Hill, Spotsylvania County, Virginia on May 8, 1839. He was educated at the University of Virginia (1857-1859) and the University of Berlin (1859-1861). During the Civil War he rose from private to second lieutenant and on to colonel in the Confederate Army. Following the war, Holladay studied law and eventually practiced in partnership with his father between 1870 and 1877. He also served in the Virginia state senate from 1871 to 1875. He taught in Richmond for a while before becoming principal of Stonewall Jackson Institute in Abingdon, Virginia. In 1885 he was elected president of the Florida State Agricultural College in Lake City. Holladay was named the first president of North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) upon its opening in 1889 and remained so for ten years until his retirement in 1899. Prior to his retirement he was honored with the degree of Doctor of Laws by Davidson College. After his resignation, Dr. Holladay spent time in Delaware, New York, and Virginia until failing health brought him back to his daughter's home in Raleigh, North Carolina. He died there on March 13, 1909.

The Alexander Quarles Holladay Papers consist of photographs, letters, a speech, a notebook, a memory book, and a certificate of Holladay's Civil War military commission. The memory book is from Holladay's final year as a student at the University of Virginia. The speech given at the presentation of his portrait provides a genealogy dating to 1702. Some photographs of Shakespearean engravings are included. The remaining materials relate to Holladay's tenure as the first president of North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) and include a "Book of Incidental Expenses" kept by Holladay during the first year, 1889-1890.
