Physical Science Data Sets
Be sure to check individual Research Guides for additional resources.
From the web site: "The ARM Archive supports the scientific field experiments of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program by storing and distributing the large quantities of data collected from these experiments. These data are used to research atmospheric radiation balance and cloud feedback processes, which are critical to the understanding of global climate change."
The primary global-change data and information analysis center of the U.S. Department of Energy, the CDIAC includes the World Data Center for Atmospheric Trace Gases.
A unique tool that identifies collections of Department of Energy-sponsored numeric files, figures and data plots, multimedia and images,
computer simulations, specialized databases, and interactive data maps.
Browse, run a quick search, or advanced search, then click a link to
results. Where available, leads to
highly specialized interfaces developed by the owners of the data that
will help you delve deeper into their collections as well as software
toolkits that allow you to manipulate, compare, visualize, download, and
re-use the data.
Includes data collections across all of the science areas with DOE
involvement at national
laboratories, data centers, scientific user facilities, colleges and
universities but specializes in data sets not available from its data centers. The DOE Data Explorer development team selected each
collection for inclusion according to strict criteria. Since it's possible they missed some, they invite users to contact them with suggestions of data sets that are not included.
Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Data Center [USGS]
http://eros.usgs.gov/
Home of the U.S. National Satellite Land Remote Sensing
Data Archive. The EROS Data Center is managed by the United States Geological Survey. Provides several tools for data discovery: the USGS Global Visualization Viewer; the Earth Explorer; and the EOS Data Gateway among others. Note: not all data is free.
A gateway to the several national data systems EPA uses to manage and assess performance of the Agency's enforcement and
compliance assurance program. Public access to some of the systems may be restricted.
The Data Web is a national repository of data on the entire U.S. nonprofit sector, based primarily on information submitted by the organizations themselves on their tax forms. Users can create reports, do some statistical analyses online, and extract data for downloading in a variety of software formats including dBase, Microsoft Excel, SAS, and SPSS. See the Nonprofits page for more detail.
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Standard Reference Data
http://www.nist.gov/srd/
Huge collection of resources for various science disciplines. Includes data, both freely available and for purchase, and tools.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Data Centers
Publicly available data sets available online for free. Click on the title to access. (Some have offline versions that are not free--don't get confused.) This Data Center is located in Asheville, NC.
Gateway to a wide spectrum of data for land, marine, satellite, snow & ice and solar-terrestrial topics.
Archives & provides public access to global oceanographic and coastal data
NASA's permanent archive for space science mission data, including "more than 25 TB of digital data from 420 mostly-NASA space science spacecraft, of which the most important 3 TB are electronically accessible."
NASA's Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) manages and distributes data products via several Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs), which all hold data within a different Earth science discipline.
- Alaska Satellite Facility (ASF) DAAC: Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), Sea Ice, Polar Processes, Geophysics
- Goddard Earth Sciences (GES) Data and Information Services Center (DISC) : Upper Atmosphere, Atmospheric Dynamics, Global Precipitation, Global Biosphere, Ocean Biology, Ocean Dynamics, Solar Irradiance
- Global Hydrology Resource Center (GHRC): Hydrologic Cycle, Severe Weather Interactions, Lightning, Convection
- Land Processes (LP) DAAC: Land Processes
- NASA Langley Atmospheric Science Data Center (LaRC) DAAC: Radiation Budget, Clouds, Aerosols, Tropospheric Chemistry
- National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) DAAC: Snow and Ice, Cryosphere and Climate
- Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) DAAC: Biogeochemical Dynamics, Ecological Data, Environmental Processes
- Physical Oceanography (PO) DAAC: Oceanic Processes, Air-Sea Interactions
- Socioeconomic Data and Applications Data Center (SEDAC): Population, Sustainability, Geospatial Data, Multilateral Environmental Agreements
From the web site: "Publicly available EPA database that contains information on toxic chemical releases and other waste management activities reported annually by certain covered industry groups as well as federal facilities."
From the web site: "The World Data Center system works to guarantee access to solar, geophysical and related environmental data. It serves the whole scientific community by assembling, scrutinizing, organizing and disseminating data and information." Includes links to other WDCs.
